Social science vs social worker?

I want to get a degree in social worker but my school only offers social science. is that the same thing?

Social science vs social worker?
It isn't the same thing, but almost everybody out there thinks it is. i would bet that if you get a degree in social science, and apply to be a social worker, it will be OK with the potential employers.

Be sure to pick up psychology courses in things like child psych, and whereever you can get background knowledge in drug use and abuse, and effects of physical and sexual abuse in children.
Reply:social work is different to social science

but id go for social science anyway its much better,
Reply:Social science is the name of the department at your school. Social worker is the name of a profession. If you want a job as a "social worker," you must have a license in the great majority of states. Unless your school offers a bachelor's degree in social work and you graduate with that degree, you won't be able to take the licensing exam. This is the situation at the college where I teach. When my students graduate, they have a bachelors degree in behavioral science or sociology. If they want to become social workers, they have to apply and be accepted to a school of social work. Since they already have a BA degree, they almost always apply for the MSW program (master of social work). That is a two year program, full time, that involves two years of course work and internships working in social services agencies under supervision.

So how does this affect you? If you are just starting out (freshman or sophmore), you might want to consider transfering to a school that offers the BSW (bachelor of social work) degree. You can practice social work with a BSW, but generally only at an entry level job. If you like the work, or if you are certain you want to continue in social work, you can then apply for a MSW degree (some schools offer both), and will only have to do one more year of school to get your MSW.
