the hospital is assigning me to a social worker what will the social worker have to do with my Treament? will the social worker talk to me ?
Will the doctors tell her about what i've done since i been here? (cut, still get sick sometimes when given food, got put on tubes for feeding)? will the social worker be like a Therapist?
Being assigned a social worker?
It sounds like you are in treatment for an eating disorder and I would assume you are in a medically supervised treatment program. In this case the social worker is a part of the treatment team and may very well be a part of your clinical theapy team and maybe even your therapist. It is also possible that the social worker could be working with you and your family and/or in a case managment role to ensure that work begins on what will happen after you are dischaged, things like aftercare, long term residential treatment, or other supportive programs to aid you in your recovery. It would be great to ask her what her role will be with you....and to tell her what role you would like her to play as well.
Reply:THe social worker will help coordinate services for you to ensure that your whole well being is being met. They often help get everything/everyone on the same boat.
They can be like a therapist if they are a mastered level social worker who has gone through clinical training. They are more likes someone who you can tell your problems to and they will provide a listening ear and advice of where to get what you need.
Reply:That depends somewhat on the hospital. My mother was assigned a social worker primarily to insure that she would be able to cope after she left the hospital. The social worker arranged for a physical therapist to come to her home, registered her for Meals on Wheels, checked that there were no stairs that she would not be able to climb to get to her bathroom, kitchen, etc, and offered her a "panic button" to summon help if she fell or had another emergency. It was all very helpful. The social worker had no input on strictly medical matters, nor was she a counselor for emotional issues - it was all a matter of getting support mechanisms co-ordinated before hospital discharge.
But, as I said, different hospitals may have different practices.
